Touchdown Pass Leads Pomfret To Victory

Last Saturday on a beautiful fall afternoon, the Pomfret School took on cross town rival Hyde. It turned out to be an exiting game with many twists and turns.

Pomfret got on the board first on a 20 yard run by Long Islander Travis Quarless (Holy Cross HS). Quarless, whose brother Andrew is the starting tight end for Penn State, represented New York City in the Outback Steakhouse NYC-Long Island football All-Star game last summer and is no stranger to big games.

Pomfret held a 7-0 lead deep into the 3rd period when Hyde scored and converted a 2 point play to take the lead 8-7.

With 6:30 to play, after an excellent punt by Hyde, Pomfret took over from their own 10 yard line. They advanced the ball to the 30 yard line on three running plays and faced a 2nd down and 8 yards to go for a 1st down. Garden City’s Leo Driscoll, who recently returned to action after a pre-season shoulder separation, rolled to his left and spotted speedy wide receiver Connor Quinn streaking down the sidelines and hit him in stride for a 70 yard scoring play. The same pair hooked up on a similar play the previous week against Canturbury when Driscoll launched a long pass into a 35 mile an hour wind that resulted in a 65 yard touchdown.

Pomfret scored another insurance touchdown in the period to win the game 22-8. Driscoll finished 9-19 passing for 145 yards and one touchdown and no interceptions. Several completions were for 1st downs on 3rd down plays.

The victory was a true team effort as all the boys contributed.
