Ways To Save Money This Winter Looking to save money this winter? It would be a shame to look back during the spring and realize you could have saved yourself some extra spending cash by merely taking the time to make a few simple changes when it comes to heating your home. That’s why Senator Kemp Hannon (6th Senate District) is offering key heating tips for everyone to consider. “As we continue to find ourselves in one of our nation’s worst recessions, Long Islanders are tightening their belts and doing their best to make do with less,” said Senator Hannon. “I strongly suggest everyone review my list of home heating tips in order to increase their savings this winter. Saving energy is saving money,” continued the Senator. LOWER THE THERMOSTAT * For every one degree you set back your thermostat, you save 1 to 3 percent on your annual heating bill. * Turn down the thermostat when you leave the house for two or more hours. It takes less energy to warm a cool house than to maintain a higher temperature all day and night. * An automatic setback thermostat can cut heating costs by raising and lowering the temperature at preset times. KEEP OUT THE COLD * Check for insulation in your attic, walls, ceilings and floors, and install more if possible. * Inexpensive weatherstripping around doors and windows can stop cold drafts. * Replace cracked windows and use easy to install storm window kits to keep out breezes. * Close your curtains at night to keep warm air inside. CONSERVE ENERGY * Turn off lights in empty rooms. * Shut off heat in unused rooms. * Run major appliances (washers, dryers, dishwashers, pool motors) before 10 am and after 9 pm. * Look for the “ENERGY STAR” label when shopping for appliances to assure the most energy efficient products. * If your furnace is over 10 years-old, replace it with an “ENERGY STAR” approved unit to save up to 30% in energy costs.
