Volunteers Needed For Boards By Stephanie Petrellese

The Village’s Environmental Advisory Board and Architectural Design Review Board have openings that need to be filled by residents who are willing and able to step up to serve their Village.

At the November 5th meeting of the Garden City Board of Education, Trustee Laurence Quinn announced that the EAB has two open positions. One position needs to be filled by a resident in the Central section, and the other is an at-large position that does not have any section requirement.

The EAB reports on environmental issues affecting the Village. Most recently, members have focused their attention on the increase in air traffic over sections of the Village. Residents said that over the past 18 months, and especially since the summer, they have noticed a significant increase in the number of airplanes flying over their homes, at lower altitudes, as they descend to land at John F. Kennedy International Airport. Some evenings they claim planes will fly every 90 seconds along the same flight path from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., and then resume at 4:30 a.m.

The ADRB’s need is more specific: the board is searching for a landscape expert, preferably a landscape architect, announced Michael Fillipon, superintendent of the Village’s building department. The ADRB examines the exterior design of buildings to maintain appropriate standards of appearance and relationship to surroundings. Plans for all new buildings, additions or exterior alterations (except those to single-family dwellings) and signs are required to be submitted to this seven-member group.

Anyone interested in filling the EAB positions should call Village Clerk Brian Ridgway at 465-4053. For the ADRB, send a letter to Michael D. Filippon, Superintendent of Buildings, Village Hall, 351 Stewart Avenue, Garden City, NY 11530 with a copy to Village Clerk Brian Ridgway.
