With Athena

Here we are closing into the middle of November with Thanksgiving drawing closer by the minute. The fall leaves are mostly down and we see the evidence of our being known as a Tree City all over the lawns and piled up by the curbs. The colors are so beautiful even in this state that it does give our spirits a lift. We can all be thankful that we live in such a lovely village and while we are giving thanks don’t let us forget to give thanks that Election Day is over and those campaign signs are now down from lawns and streets. I for one have never believed that those signs raise anyone’s vote count but they appear during all campaigns and do nothing for the beauty of the towns or the votes they are supposed to gather for the candidates they name.

Folks are dong the dining out thing and Jim King and his wife Pat recently greeted Miriam and Dick Benack while they were both having dinner at one of the local restaurants.

Congratulations to Althea Rohinson, Executive Director of the Garden City Chamber of Commerce, for her letter to the Editor in a recent edition of the Garden City News. The letter explained in detail why the Community Day had to be called off and the reasons for it being done the day before. So much is inolved in preparing for this day and so may people are involved that it was great that she made it so clear. Well put, Althea!

While you are attending the Art Show by Suzie Alvey at the Garden City Library, do stop by and look over the glass cases on the first floor by the check-out desk. They will tell you a lot about the Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead and you can enjoy some of their memorbelia from their 90 years as a club in this town.

The Friends of the Adelphi University Library held their annual Art Lecture with a speaker from the Brooklyn Musem talking on their excellent Egyptian collection. One couple who were planning a trip to Egypt to celebrate their 50th Anniversary atempted to give them a flavor of what they would be seeing when they get there. They had a good turn out as ususal and Maureen Fraser, who also invited her neighbor, was delighted with the program and also delighted to have won a Gift Certificate to Barnes & Noble.

The Garden City Branch of AAUW will be having a meeting of its Joy of Reading group on Wednesday, November 19th at 1:00 p.m. Chairlady Alberta Maggie has asked Janet Fecht to handle getting copies of the book and the Co-Hostesses are Georgena Harrison and Marie Bartelotta. These reading groups are everywhere now and I am happy that so many of our people are reading. It certainly beats watching the telly.

The Reader’s Circle at the Garden City Community Church will have its meeting on December 8th when the hostesses will be Edith Trestik, Pat Dalton, Anne Marie Smith, and Lynn Sullivan. So you see that reading really is the “in” thing these days.

Happy birthday wishes go to Bill Polon, who will be celebrating his special day on the 16th of this month followed by Mary Polak who will do the same on November 17th and Joan Jerdan who will blow out the candles on her cake on the 16th. Many happy returns of the day to one and all and may you have nothing but health and happiness with many more years to come.

Happy wedding anniversarty wishes go to Lynn and LeRoy Boisen who will do their celebrating on the 14th of November and there are wishes for many more anniversaries to come.

Unfortunately there is always sad news and we have two of our well known ladies to say goodby to. Kay Rayfield, who was a long time resident of this town until she moved to Connecticut to be near her children and grandchildren. Kay passed away recently and her son brought her back to town so friends could say goodby. She was very active in the Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead, in the Garden City Branch of AAUW, and in the Community Church. She will be missed by all her friends and our thoughts and prayers go to her son James, to his wife and to her grandchildren.

The other lady was also a long time resident of Garden City and she passed away in mid October. She was Marian G. Langley, also active in both the Community Club and the Garden City Community Church. She, too, will be missed by all who knew her. May they both rest in peace.

See you next week!
