Community Club’s Day Trip On Paumanok
The Community Club at Oheka Castle.
On October 22, the Community Club sponsored a bus trip to Oheka Castle, the 56th Flighter Group Restaurant and Walt Whitman’s birthplace.
The members were fascinated with Oheka Castle - its history and Gatsby-like stories, its grounds and its luxurious accommodations. Oheka, built about 1919, was the home of Otta Kahn and is the second largest private historic home in the country.
The next stop was the ‘56th’ for lunch and then on to Walt Whitman’s birthplace, the last historic site for the day.
The members were greeted royally, viewed a film followed by a lecture and then a tour of the home. The trip on Paumanok (Whitman’s used this native American name for Long Island) was satisfying and informative. Join the club in the future for varied activities.
