In a truly thrilling game, the top seeded Garden City Trojans boys varsity soccer team played host to the No.16 Division Blue Dragons last Saturday afternoon for a first round playoff game. It was a blustery day with a wind so strong that there was no telling where the ball might end up. Division opened up the scoring with a goal by Logan Simone, off an assist from Conor O’Leary in the first half. The Blue Dragons kept the 1-0 lead going into the second half. As the game progressed, so did the level of intensity. The Trojans, kicking into the wind, put pressure on the Division goalkeeper and it finally paid off as Topher DiBona, off an assist from Vincent Tavernese, scored for the Trojans and tied the game. With time running out, GC’s Will Mignon was tripped in the box and scored on the ensuing penalty kick, giving the Trojans the 2-1 victory. George Spanos made five saves in goal for GC. The Trojans advanced to the next round for a game against Lynbrook on Wednesday, November 4th but that game occurred too late for this edition.
