OUR YOUNG PEOPLE AND HALLOWEEN

Regrettably, all too often our young people are criticized for the negative behavior of a relative few. I am pleased to let you know that this Halloween was virtually free of vandalism demonstrating that our young people do care about their Village. On behalf of the parents, I thank residents for providing delicious but safe “treats” for the children. A good day was had by all!

VETERAN’S DAY

Veteran’s Day, November 11th, is the one day each year in which America remembers her sons and daughters who served in the Armed Forces of the United States. It is right that a gratified nation set aside one day a year to recognize and remember these men and women.

On Wednesday, November 11th, the William Bradford Turner Post of the American Legion of Garden City will hold a short memorial salute to these Veterans at 11 a.m. at the memorial situated on the Library grounds at Seventh Street. All residents are invited and encouraged to attend these brief ceremonies.

VILLAGE OFFICES CLOSED

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2009

Village offices will be closed on Wednesday, November 11, 2009, in observance of Veteran’s Day. For your convenience, correspondence for the Village may be placed in the “Letter” drop slot at the front door.

There will be regular garbage and recycling pickup on Veteran’s Day.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES’ MEETING SCHEDULE

The next regularly scheduled Board of Trustees’ meeting is on November 19, 2009.

S.T.O.P. PROGRAM

The Town of Hempstead Sanitation Department will conduct its monthly S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) program on Sunday, November 8, 2009. The program, which is held at various locations throughout the Town of Hempstead, will make hazardous waste facilities accessible to as many residents as possible.

This Sunday’s program will be held at Baldwin Park, 3232 Grand Avenue, Baldwin. The hours of operation will be 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Under the S.T.O.P. program, residents are able to take polluting materials to the facility and have them disposed of by a registered professional disposal company, free of charge. The facility will not accept the following materials: Ammunition, Explosives, Fireworks, Infectious or Medical Waste, Propane or Oxygen Tanks, Radioactive Materials, Unlabeled Materials and Fire Extinguishers. Non-conforming or damaged propane tanks can be returned to the establishment that refills your grill tanks.

VILLAGE’S WEB SITE

I encourage residents to periodically utilize the Village’s website for information regarding the Village’s operations, as well as items of seasonal and special interest. The address is www.gardencityny.net. For your convenience, listed on the Village’s home page direct link to the Garden City Library in which you will find various programs offered to residents of all ages.
