NSDAR Chapter To Celebrate Anniversary
The Colonel Aaron Ogden Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, will celebrate its 80th anniversary of being chartered this year.
To mark this notable occasion, the chapter will host a luncheon on Thursday, November 19th at noon at the Milleridge Inn in Jericho. Honored speaker at the event will be Gretta Beck Archer, New York State Regent. Cost to attend the luncheon is $28 per person, and seating is limited. Those interested in attending are asked to contact chapter Treasurer Shirley Weiss no later than November 6th.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution has a membership comprised of approximately 180,000 woman nationwide who can document their descent from Revolutionary War patriots.The organization has a focus on patriotism, education and historic preservation and actively pursues those objectives. National headquarters is in Washington DC, in an historic building across the ellipse from the White House. It houses a museum and one of the nation’s premier genealogical libraries.
The Colonel Aaron Ogden Chapter is named for Revolutionary War patriot Aaron Ogden. He was born in New Jersey in 1756, although his ancestors were among the first settlers of Long Island in the early 17th century. After graduation from Princeton, he enlisted in an American Revolutionary army regiment in New Jersey. He fought in the Battles of Brandywine and Monmouth and by 1779 was an aide to General John Sullivan. He was commissioned by General Washington to arrange for the exchange of General Benedict Arnold for Major John Andre. After the successful conclusion of the Revolution, he studied law. He became a presidential elector in 1796, a Senator in 1801 and became Governor of New Jersey in 1812.
