Named News 12 Scholar Athlete

2009-10-23 / School

Mariah Pewarski, a senior at Garden City High School, was recently named a News 12 Scholar Athlete, the first Long Island student so honored this year, and featured on the station’s October 5th news broadcast. Mariah is a two-sport athlete, playing mid-field in girls’ varsity field hockey and defense for the girls’ varsity lacrosse team.

Pictured here with Athletic Director Nancy Kalafus (at right) and high school Principal Nanine Cuttitta, Mariah accepted her award on behalf of Garden City High School. Ms. Kalafus later commented about this outstanding young scholar athlete: “Mariah Pewarski excels in the classroom and on the field. She is a very confident and well-rounded young lady. Mariah has been a starter on the field hockey team since her freshman year and the lacrosse team since her sophomore year. The field hockey team has won the state tournament twice in that time and the state finalist (losing in double overtime) the other year. In lacrosse, the team has been the state champion for the past three years. Mariah’s work ethic is unbelievable. She works constantly to improve her already strong skills, has endless energy and stamina, and inspires others to keep pushing themselves to their potential.”

Mariah will be attending Harvard in the fall, playing on both the field hockey and lacrosse teams.

Congratulations to Mariah Pewarski on her 2009 Scholar Athlete distinction!
