Buckley fourth grader Grace Limoncelli is excited to be back for a new school year! Celebrating its 87th year, Buckley Country Day School opened the academic year on September 10th, welcoming 340 eager students, the school’s largest nursery-grade 8 enrollment in nearly 40 years.

At the opening assembly, Headmaster Dr. Jean-Marc Juhel’s address set the tone for the year. After extending a warm greeting to all 85 new children and their families, with a special welcome to the class of 2010, Dr. Juhel talked to all about goals for the day and for the year.

Referring to the faculty summer reading, Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers, Headmaster Juhel explained to students how their success this year depends more upon their hard work than just their talent. Quoting Winston Churchill, he impressed upon the children that “attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.”

Then, in true Buckley tradition, the eighth graders welcomed each newcomer to the school community as another exciting year began on a high note. Student Council Presidents Sarah O’Sullivan and Dylan McKibbins told their peers that “Buckley is your extended family. When you’re going through tough times, you’ll always find comfort with the members of your Buckley family and someone to lean on.” The senior class then intoned their rendition of “Lean on Me.”

To the children’s delight, Dr. Juhel announced the opening of a renovated dining room and auditorium as well as the construction of a new playground.

The assembly concluded with a luncheon served to students, their families, faculty and staff.
