A Word From The Publisher

2009-10-23 / Letters

In this week’s issue we feature news on a variety of different local issues, as well as a large number of letters to the editor. Quite a few of the letters we received this week are in favor of the Lighthouse project, and while we don’t agree with their opinions, we are glad to host a discussion of the issues.

We also are featuring an article about recent disagreement between the Village and the School District as to how to best safeguard children who now have to cross Nassau Boulevard at Stratford Avenue. We hope that the Village and the School District come to a speedy resolution of the problem. This is clearly a busy intersection, and it would be absolutely horrible if a child were injured or killed there. The Village and School District have shown great ability to work together in the past - surely there is some solution to this problem. At the very least, a temporary crossing guard should be immediately assigned pending a permanent decision.

Another new topic is the application by NextG Networks to place cell phone equipment on fifteen streetlight poles in the Village. We understand that the applicant apparently has the right to place the equipment on the poles without needing approval. While the installations on the taller light poles in the Village may not be particularly noticeable, those planned for the residential areas will be. Due to the technical requirements, the poles will be around 48 feet high. The existing poles in those areas are 22 to 25 feet high, so the new installations will more than double their height. At least there are only going to be fifteen of them, though, scattered throughout the village.
