Town Seeks VITA Volunteers
Supervisor Kate Murray is seeking volunteers to participate in Hempstead Town’s annual VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. VITA, now entering its 35th year, trains volunteers to assist seniors of our township in preparing their annual income tax returns.
“We are thrilled to once again sponsor this wonderful program under the auspices of the Internal Revenue Service,” stated Supervisor Murray. “For over 34 years, invaluable aid has been offered to seniors for free through this program.”
The VITA program will train volunteers at the Town of Hempstead’s Department of Senior Enrichment located at 200 North Franklin Street in Hempstead. The multi-day training program will begin on January 11, 2010. Saturday training sessions will be held at the Lakeview Public Library on January 9, 16, 23 and 30 and February 7, 2010. The library is located at 1120 Woodfield Road, Rockville Centre. E-file training is scheduled for December 10 and 11.
Upon completion of training, volunteers will be assigned to work at town senior centers and local libraries for at least three daytime hours a week for the 10-week program during the months of February, March and April 2010. All instructors have been trained by the IRS.
Those interested in joining this outstanding group of volunteers should contact the Town of Hempstead Department of Senior Enrichment at (516) 485-8100, ext. 273.
“Every year, we have superb volunteers who give generously of their time to help their fellow neighbors,” concluded Supervisor Murray. “I urge them to return this year and for new volunteers to step forward for the benefit of our seniors.”
