Harbor Pilot Addresses GC Retired Men’s Club
Joe Leto, President Garden City Retired Men’s Club, Capt. Richard Rocke, George Salem, Programs Director Garden City Retired Men’s Club
On Monday, September 21st, the Garden City Retired Men’s Club was privileged to have as a guest speaker Capt. Richard Roche, a Harbor Pilot and member of the United New York Sandy Hook Pilots Association. Capt. Roche spoke of the intricacies involved in maneuvering huge vessels, including aircraft carriers, ocean liners and a submarine or two thru the narrow and often shallow path to or from a safe berth in the New York Harbor. He explained how a vessel seeking entry or departure would radio a call to the Sandy Hook Pilots Association requesting the services of a Harbor Pilot. The Harbor Pilot would board the ship, be escorted to the bridge and guide the vessel safely into or out of the port. Tide, ships draft, sandbars’ location and proper utilization of tug boats are all important factors left to the professional judgment of the Harbor Pilot. The audience appreciated and was visibly impressed by the enormous detail involved to accomplish this seemingly simple task.
