For the fifth year, Troy Sorensen, a 7th grader at the Garden City Middle School, will lead his ‘Troy’s Trojans’ team of walkers in this annual event. Troy was diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes at the age of seven, and requires four insulin shots along with frequent blood sugar level checks each day.

JDRF’s mission is to raise funds to support research for a cure for Troy and the millions just like him, including spokesperson’s Nick Jonas, Mary Tyler Moore and Elliott Yamin. In fact, JDRF funds a major portion of all Type 1 diabetes research worldwide, more than any other charity. Their funding and leadership is associated with most major scientific breakthroughs in Type 1 diabetes research to date.

Last year, Troy’s Trojans was successful in raising over $10,000 in support of a cure. This year, Troy is hoping to top the number. Each dollar raised is just another step closer to that ultimate goal. Anyone who would like to support Troy and his team can make a donation (no amount is too small) via the JDRF Web site at www.walk.jdrf.org You may also register to participate in the walk, where aside from good exercise there is also food and music, plus rides and face painting for children at the Old Westbury campus.
