What’s Up For Young Adults At The Library Celebrate Teen Read Week
Teen Read Week 2009 is Oct. 18th-24th. This year’s theme is “Read Beyond Reality @ your library,” which encourages teens to read something out of this world, just for the fun of it. The Garden City Library offer a wide choice of reading to teens, including magazines, newspapers, classic stories, graphic novels, how-to books and more. The Library also offers teens their own space where they can use computers or work with friends.
Celebrate Teen Read Week by visiting the Library during the week and then attend the first fall Yak & Snack on Saturday, October 24, from 3 - 4:30 PM. Enjoy refreshments and discuss The Last Book in the Universe by Rodman Philbrick.
Philbrick’s science fiction novel is set a thousand years in the future when an earthquake destroys much of the planet and an epileptic teenager nicknamed Spaz begins the heroic fight to bring human intelligence back to Earth. Registration for Yak & Snack began on September 26th so sign up and pick up a copy of the book.
Edible Haunted Houses
Get ready for Halloween and make an edible haunted house with spooky decorations at the Library. Instructor Sue Bazzicalupo will host this workshop for young adults on Saturday, Oct. 17th from 3-4:15PM. Registration is limited to 25 participants and began on Oct. 3rd.
College Application Process
On Wednesday October 21st from 7 - 8:30PM, the Library will host the final college prep workshop on the Application Process for College. Jason Fuller, assistant director of Admissions at Adelphi University, will give a step-by-step college admission presentation for high school students and their parents. Find the right school to fit the major of your choice. Registration began on Wednesday, Oct 7th.
YA Movie Night
A YA Movie Night will be held on Monday, November 2 at 7PM. The movie Coraline will be shown. Register beginning Monday, October 19th to see this film about a young girl who walks through a secret door and discovers an alternate version of her life. Refreshments will be served.
Young adult programs are for students in Grade 6-12 and priority is given to Garden City Library cardholders. Registration for young adults may also now be done through the Library’s new online calendar system Eventkeeper, which may be reached 24/7 by clicking on Calendar of Events on the website at www.gardencitypl.org.
