The Garden City Book Club met in September to discuss Greg Mortenson’s New York Times best seller Three Cups Of Tea. While on a climbing trip to Afghanistan, Greg met a group of children sitting in the dirt writing with sticks in the sand, and made a promise to help them build a school. Mortenson has dedicated his life to promoting education, especially for girls, in remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Mortenson is the co-founder of the non-profit Central Asia Institute and founder of Pennies For Peace, where donations have helped build over 78 schools in rural areas where few education opportunities existed before.

Joining the book club was Mrs. Maureen Clemente, a sixth grade teacher at the Jericho Public Schools. Jericho Schools have adopted a One Book-One District literacy program, where all the children in the district will read Three Cups of Tea and participate in the Pennies For Peace. A children’s version of the story is called Listen to the Wind.
