Upon arrival on scene, firefighters encountered a fire in the basement that was apparently electrical in nature. In addition, firefighters also quickly determined that the house electrical service to the home was also on fire on the exterior of the home. Due to the severity of the situation, the Long Island Power Authority was requested for an immediate response to de-energize the home so the firefighters could tackle the blaze. According to Assistant Chief Bill Castoro, the Incident Commander, “we were able to contain the blaze and monitor the situation while LIPA responded. Once LIPA was able to de-energize the home, we were able to limit fire spread and extension inside the home.” Also responding to assist mutual aid at the scene and to cover our district were the Mineola, Franklin Square, new Hyde Park and Garden City Park Fire Departments. The fire is under routine investigation.
