Matthew Colantonio, starting catcher for the Amsterdam Mohawks of the New York State Collegiate Baseball League, won the NYCBL Championship for the Summer 2009 season. The Mohawks finished the season with an impressive 36 - 12 record winning their last 14 games in a row. In their final game, the Mohawks beat the Hornell Dodgers to become NYCBL Champions for 2009. On Sunday Sept 20th, Cherry Valley crowned its 2009 golf champions with Steve Sloane winning the men’s title by beating two time defending club champion Jay Sessa, Sally McLaughlin claiming the Ladies 18 holers by besting Ann Marie Blatz and Debbie Ohl earning the Ladies 9 hole competition. The Thunder wearing their away white game jerseys and white pants continued the momentum from last week’s game vs. East Rockaway. The U10 FIRE recently opened their fall season looking to stay hot and build off of their spring season success where they reached the championship series. The FIRE opened the fall with a dominating 10-1 win against the LI All Stars and then played quality ball in a 10-4 win over the CP Starts. More ... Playing in their second Patriot’s Day Tournament at Ripken and making their third journey overall to this Maryland mecca of little league baseball, the Long Island Lightning, comprised of a dozen players from Garden City and East Williston, raised some eyebrows and made a statement during four games on September 12 and 13. More ... After their 2-0 victory over South Side on September 21st, the Garden City boys soccer team has yet to give up a goal this season. Teddy Tomao scored in the fourth minute and Vincent Tavernese scored off an assist from Topha DiBona with 11 minutes left in the game to give the Trojans the win over the Cyclones. More ... The Garden City Trojans JV football team traveled to Levittown to take on the MacArthur Generals on Monday afternoon September 21st. Garden City won the game 30-8. Trojans running backs Ryan Norton and Scott D’Antonio ran the ball well for GC helped by blocking from the offensive line including Scott Mongiardo and Mike Gilbert. More ... The Girls Varsity Swim Team traveled to Syosset on Wednesday, September 16th and came away with a victory. Coach Anne Sullivan utilized many of the young swimmers and put together a strong line-up.
