College Prep Programs for Young Adults
On Wednesday, September 30 at 7:30PM Dr. Martha Maloof, PhD will present How To Write a Winning College Essay. Dr. Maloof will talk about the secrets of composing a well written college essay. She will critique essays and answer questions at the end of the program. Registration began on Wednesday, September 16th.
The following week on Wednesday October 21st from 7 - 8:30 , the Library will host a workshop on the Application Process for College. Jason Fuller, assistant director of Admissions at Adelphi University, will give a step-by-step college admission presentation for high school students and their parents. Learn ways to find the right school to fit the major of your choice. Registration begins Wednesday, Oct 7th .
The final workshop for the college bound will be held on Wednesday, October 14th from 7 - 8:30PM . College financial aid experts Barry Fox and Wendy David-Gaines will explain how to obtain the maximum financial aid for college. Find out “How Long Islanders Can Beat the High Cost of College” at this workshop for parents and students. Questions will be answered and step by step instructions will be given on filling out the necessary forms.
Mini Party/Gift Bag Craft Workshop
Join instructor Joanne Insinga and learn to create mini gift bags and keepsake boxes decorated with party, sports or holiday themes on Wednesday, October 7th from 7 - 8:30PM. Registration begins on Wednesday, September 23rd and is limited to 20 participants.
Celebrate Teen Read Week at
YAK & Snack Book Discussion
YAs are invited to celebrate Teen Read Week which is October 18-24 . This year’s theme is “Read Beyond Reality @ Your Library.” Enjoy refreshments and join the first fall “Yak & Snack”, which will be a discussion of The Last Book in the Universe, by Rodman Philbrick. A thousand years in the future, an earthquake destroys much of the planet, and an epileptic teenager nicknamed Spaz begins the heroic fight to bring human intelligence back to Earth. Register and pick up the book beginning Saturday, September 26th.
Young adult programs are for students in Grade 6-12 and priority is given to Garden City Library cardholders. Registration may be done in person, by phone at 742-8405, or by email to the Young Adult Librarian Marge Kelly at mkelly@gardencitypl.org. Registration for young adults may also now be done through the Library’s new online calendar system Eventkeeper, which may be reached 24/7 by clicking on Calendar of Events on the website at www.gardencitypl.org. Funding for these programs is provided by The Friends of The Garden City Public Library.
