Monday Movie Milestone

When the lights dimmed in the Garden City Library’s auditorium at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, September 14 th , the title on the screen appeared and it was The 39 Steps. This marked the beginning of the ninth year of this popular program sponsored by The Friends of the Library.

Begun in September 2001, co-hosts Sal Catania and Tom Richmond announced that, to date, 336 films have been shown with a total attendance of 17,123 patrons. Since it was the eighth birthday for this popular program, there was popcorn, punch and cookies for all.

Buoyed by the success of this program, Messrs. Catania and Richmond also initiated a series of first run movies on the first Thursday of each month. Previously, the Central Nassau Library System had provided these films but, when the system closed down, The Friends of the Library stepped in and offered to pay the copyright and royalty fees for both series. Seventy-seven films have been shown in the Thursday series with a total attendance of 4,419 patrons.

Monthly schedules featuring the titles of the films to be shown are available at the circulation desk.
