Irish Society Meeting
The St. Patrick’s Battalion, also called in Mexico Los San Patricios, is the topic at the October 6 meeting of the Irish Cultural Society. Ian McGowan, the speaker, will use a film in his review of the history of a group of Irish soldiers who defected to the Mexican side during the Mexican-American War. He will broach the question of whether these soldiers were heroes or traitors,
The meeting starts at 8:00 p.m. at the Garden City Library, 60 Seventh Street, across the street from the Garden City Hotel. Admission is free and open to the public.
Mr. McGowan is the director of the Winged Fist Organization. He spoke last year at the Society’s meeting on the Irish-American Athletic Association and Celtic Park. His topic at this meeting is controversial. His film will show the audience the honors given to the defectors by the Mexican government, and he will provide the audience with the background of the circumstances around the event. A controversial topic, an enthusiastic speaker and indefatigable researcher promise to make this meeting a lively one.
