Florence Finneran, 82, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 27th after succumbing to lung cancer.

Born in New York City in 1927, Florence was the loving daughter of John P. and Florence M. Finneran. She attended Sargent College in Boston, Massachusetts. She taught physical education for more than four decades in Garden City, where she also coached girls field hockey. An athletic achievement and sportsmanship award was named in her honor and is still distributed to athletes in the region. Upon retiring in 1993, she moved her primary residence to Colorado Springs, Colorado, and spent several months of the year in Apache Junction, Arizona, to pursue her love of golf year-round. She also enjoyed dogs, sailing, athletics and spending time with family and friends.

Florence was preceded in death by her parents and her brother John G. Finneran. She is survived by her sister-in-law Lillian Finneran, her two nephews John G. Finneran, Jr. and William Finneran and her three nieces Patricia Diepold, Sharon Manto and Kathleen Avsec and their families.

Joyce Adams Housman A funeral service will be held at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Silver Spring, Maryland, at 11:00 AM on September 12, 2009. Joyce Adams Housman

Joyce Adams Housman, long time resident of Garden City, NY, most recently of Grand Harbor in Vero Beach, Florida, died peacefully in New York on August 22, 2009, at age 79. Joyce is survived by her husband of 56 years, Russell J. Housman, and their children James Housman of Great Fall, VA, Elizabeth Riley of Peach Tree City, GA, Douglas Housman of South Salem, NY, Russell Housman of Franklin Square, NY, and their spouses. She was the beloved grandmother of Michael, Patrick, Craig, Emma Grace, Henry, Carollynn and Cydney. She is also survived by her brother, Richard Hansel.

Joyce was born in 1929 in Brooklyn to Douglas and Dorothy (Adams) Hansel. She attended Skidmore College, was a graduate of SUNY New Paltz, and later received her Masters of Education from Adelphi University. Joyce was an award-winning teacher in the Garden City Park School System for 25 years, and after retiring in 1993, continued to positively influence the lives of numerous students through tutoring and mentoring. Joyce and Russ lived in Garden City for many years, and were active members of both Cherry Valley Country Club and Lawrence Beach Club. Joyce particularly loved the ocean and cherished her times at the beach.

Joyce and her family took comfort during her struggle with cancer in the love and support extended by her countless friends, many of whom were a presence in her life since her early years in Garden City.

A Memorial Service was conducted on Wednesday, August 26th at Fairchild Sons in Garden City, followed by a private internment at Maple Grove Cemetery in Kew Gardens, Queens. Friends and family celebrated Joyce's life on the afternoon of August 26th at Cherry Valley Country Club.

Contributions in Joyce's memory may be directed to EnableGa (www.EnableGa.org), an organization that has become a national model in helping developmentally disabled adults live in an independent, nurturing environment. Any contribution, small or large, will have a direct impact on EnableGa's ability to serve its residents, and Russ and Joyce were generous supporters over the years.

Olivia L. Naber McDougal

Olivia L. Naber McDougal (Dolly), age 94, died peacefully on August 21 at Walnut Creek Nursing Center in Dayton, Ohio. She formerly was a resident of Rockville Centre and Garden City, NY and College Harbor/Allegro Retirement Community in St. Petersburg, FL. She was a graduate of Southside High School, Class of 1935 and was married to her late husband, Edward, at St. Agnes in 1939. She is survived by her son Edward and daughter-in-law Sheila of Rockville Centre and their children Danielle Saillor, Christine McDougal, Jennifer Benck and Terrence Strong; son Peter and daughter-in-law Monica of Coral Gables, FL and their son Charlie; son Patrick and daughter-in-law Victoria of Portland, OR and their children Lydia and Chloe; her daughter Maureen and son-in-law Fred Willits of Kettering, OH and their children Rick (Leslie), David (Denise) and Jessica (John) Archibald. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren and a sister, Mary Burns, of CA.

A private service was held in Dayton for family and close friends. A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Long Island at a later date. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Dolly's favorite charity, The Salvation Army.
