Garden City Rovers showing their Covanta Tournament awards... The Garden City Rovers U10 boys soccer team took the pitch for the first time as a team this past weekend at the Covanta Soccer Tournament. Although playing in the Premier Division the boys did not disappoint. With their first game against a weak South Huntington team the boys quickly pounced on their prey by scoring 6 goals for a 6 to nil win. In their second game the Rovers took on a tough and game Massapequa team, but they quickly took control of the game with 3 quick goals in the first half and some superb goalkeeping and defense kept the Fire off the board for a Rovers 4-0 win. In the 3rd game of the tournament the Rovers took on the elite Dix Hills team and although the score doesn't show it they played a gritty and tough game against Dix Hills who have been playing together for 3 years, however in the end the Rovers loss 5-0, but opened a few eyes especially the Hurricanes coach who said he couldn't wait to see this team after one year under their belt. In their 4th game the boys came out and stuck with SABA soccer club from Brooklyn for the first 15 minutes and gave the Saba team quite a scare after going into halftime 2-0 the Rovers opened up the 2nd half with a quick goal to cut the deficit to 2-1 with Saba scoring 2 late goals the boys lost 4-1. In the final game of the tournament the Rovers took on the Hawks of East Meadow and put on quite a scoring display and a clinic on unselfishness. The Rovers opened up a 4-0 lead in route to a 6-2 win and a 3rd place finish which the boys truly deserved. The coaches would like to thank the parents who helped make the tournament run smoothly and also a big thanks and WOW to the players Luke Connolly, Justin Coppola, Andrew Desantis, Matt Granville, Mike Handal, Will Honan, Liam Muldoon, John Murphy, John Skahill, Owen Wieland and Tyler Wuchte who showed the total TEAM PACKAGE the coaches expected to see. Thanks for putting up with all Coach Connolly's yelling instructions and you are truly going to be a team to fear in the immediate future. Love that passing and great goalkeeping.
