Socially Speaking
Here we are at the Labor Day weekend and school will be starting just after that. The G.C. Pool will be put to rest until next year and many of the members are sad to see it close. This also marks the beginning of club programs and the monthly bridges that have been resting since last June. Most people find their social calendars are filling up very quickly but, in truth, it really is no quicker than last year or the year before that. Do make sure that you keep up with the dates or you will miss a number of good times.
Dorothy and Ed Alford are back from Saratoga where they spent a fair amount of time at the winner's window, which meant they had good luck on the races. They enjoyed a special B-Day dinner at the Gideon Putnam Hotel as Ed's B-Day is the 12 th of August and Dorothy's is the 18 th. What a nice compromise and I'm sure they had a good time there, too.
Hofstra University, with its performance of "42 nd Street" drew a full house many from Garden City who were there enjoying the afternoon. Among them were Regina Dowling, Gerry McHugh, Sheila Birkenstock, Lou Tice, and Marjorie Maher, theater goers one and all.
Ed Palkot has some good news that brought a smile to his face and a happy beat to his heart. Ed's son Greg wound up his activities in Afghanistan regarding the elections there for Fox Cable News and Ed expects to see him back in Garden City very soon. Ed is always happy to see his son back home and out of harms way, as are we all.
The Auxiliary of the William Bradford Turner Post here in town will be hosting its September Bridge, Card and Games Party at the Senior Center on Sunday, September 27 th from 12:30 to 5. For the price of $20 per person, you can tuck yourself into a great meal - chicken cordon bleu, pot roast with gravy, eggplant parmigiana, stir-fry veggies, mashed potatoes, salad, cake, tea or coffee. This includes a wine bar, beer or soda. Cards and tables are available from Mrs. Joan Nedelka who is accepting reservations at 111 Nassau Blvd. Garden City, N.Y. 11530. Make your check payable to W.B.T. Unit #265 and get it in soon. Space is limited at the Senior Center and you don't want to miss this. Need I add there will be raffle prizes and 50/50 to put icing on the cake.
The ladies bridge at the Garden City Casino is back to its regular schedule of playing from September through June from what I hear. Last year they started in October and ended in May and the thinking was probably that folks were still at vacation in September and June, but the ladies are now gathering their tables in order to start play as they always have. Florence Beach is gathering her table and so are Judy Radocy, Connie Lockwood and many others.
Sue Bashian will be taking reservations for the Chrysanthemum Bridge sponsored by the Auxiliary of the G.C. Community Church to be held on Monday, October 19 th starting at 12 noon. As you can see, bridge is "IN" - (was it ever out in this town) so you are always safe in getting your table organized for these events and getting your reservations in on time.
Happy birthday wishes go to Frank Alonge, who will be doing his celebrating on September 10 th at his new home in the Carolinas. While they moved down there last month, I believe that the paper will arrive at their new home for we don't want him to think we are not thinking of him. Bob Sexton will also be doing his celebrating on September 11 th and we wish him a wonderful birthday and many more years of health and happiness as he blows out the candles on his cake.
Taxes are always with us so I thought you would like to know that Lincoln signed the Internal Revenue Act in June of 1864 that increased taxes to five percent on those earning between 600 and 5,000 dollars and to ten percent on those earning over 5,000 dollars. The legislation required taxpayers to submit a list of their income and taxable property to the tax assessor by May 1 st, the start of the income tax season, and still the deadline for challenging local tax assessments.
Following that information, do have a nice Labor Day and I'll see you next week.
