      HOLA of Garden City, Inc. will be celebrating its 6th year by holding a Welcoming Cocktail Party for new and current members on Friday, September 25, at Novita Restaurant from 8:00-11:00 PM. HOLA of Garden City is a non-profit organization founded by a group of Garden City residents who are interested in promoting Spanish culture in a social atmosphere for our community.

      Here we are at the Labor Day weekend and school will be starting just after that. The G.C. Pool will be put to rest until next year and many of the members are sad to see it close. This also marks the beginning of club programs and the monthly bridges that have been resting since last June.

The nuptial mass as followed by a reception at the Menlo Circus Club in Atherton, California. Members of the wedding party included the groom's sisters, Kristen Sullivan and Jennifer Sullivan, as bridesmaids.

Former Resident Writes Book
      Robert Lockwood Mills of Sun City Center, Florida, who lived in Garden City as a boy, has authored his seventh published book, Baseball—-Then and Now . It recalls his days as a sandlot player on a field behind Stratford School, which he attended from 1951-1953, and continues as a nostalgic look at the evolution of the game at the major-league level.

Completes Internship
      Jennifer Ryniker, GCHS Class of 2006, a Hospitality major at James Madison University, is scheduled to graduate in May 2010. This summer she successfully completed a three month internship at the Four Seasons Hotel in Istanbul, Turkey where she worked in various different departments with an international staff.

      Due to popular demand, the Recreation Department will again offer an adult pastel class taught by Arleen Ruth Urban. This class is open to adult residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. The class will run from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Fridays beginning September 18. Our classes will be held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul's.

      John Lappas, a parishioner of St. Anne's parish for over 20 years and an active member of Msgr. John's Knights has been stricken with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease". This is a neuro-degenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, and then progresses to the muscles throughout the body.

Volunteers Have The Spirit At St. Anne's
      The time is drawing near. In two weeks many will gather at St Anne's to celebrate the annual festival, known as Spirit Day.       The Garden City Historical Society is proud to welcome Samuel G. White, great-grandson of the famed architect Stanford White, as a guest lecturer in the Society's "Meet the Author" series. Adelphi Freshman At Garden City Bird Sanctuary
      Adelphi University's Associate Dean of Student Affairs, Della Hudson-Tomlin, lead a group of over forty incoming freshmen students on a three day program of volunteer community service in the communities surrounding the Adelphi campus. The Freshman Community Action Program, FCAP, celebrated its 4th year with an August 26 work day with Rob Alvey at the Garden City Bird Sanctuary.

Storytime registration can be done either online at www.gardencitypl.org or in person. Book discussion registration may only be done in the Children's Department.

Over 1600 Children Attended Programs At Library
      During the Library's six week summer season, the Children's Department held 57 programs for children of various ages with attendance exceeding 1,600! The Children's Department staff registered over 600 children in the Tomorrow's Talents and Tiny Talents Summer Reading Clubs.

Working On Girl Scout Gold Award
      Cara Matina is working towards her Girl Scout Gold Award. In doing so she hosted a monthly meeting with Cultural Care Au pair and the newest aupair arrivals from around the world to the Garden City and North Shore communities. She discussed with them the dangers of texting and drunk driving.

Each canvas tote bag (pictured) contains everything a book club needs, including 10 copies of the title, audio material, and an information package with a summary, book reviews, biographical information, discussion questions, an author interview, and suggestions for further reading.
