Book Discussions and Storytimes

for School Age Children

The Garden City Library Children's Department has a number of programs for elementary school children, in addition to preschoolers. There are two sessions of Kindergarten storytime, which features folktales from around the world. Kindergarteners have the opportunity to become familiar with these wonderful, entertaining stories that have been told to so many children throughout the years. They also do a simple craft. The storytime for First Grade features the very best in picture books and stories in a variety of formats, and also concludes with a fun craft.

Children who are entering Second Grade are ready for their first book discussion group. Book discussions are designed to help children start thinking critically about books, and grow confident in sharing their opinions and enjoyment of children's literature. Chapter Chat is our introductory book discussion for second graders. All participants read the same book from the easy reader section. When they meet, they are polled about their opinions, play games based upon the book, watch a related, book-based film, and do a craft. Third graders can join New Friends in a Book. They discuss the selection, play a trivia game based on the book, and enjoy other fun activities. Go Fourth! is a time for fourth graders to come together, discuss a book and enjoy each other's company. The Page Turners is a book discussion group for children in the fifth grade. Participants read a book from a popular genre, such as mystery or fantasy. In addition to discussing the selection, they will talk about similar favorites, and do some related activities.

Registration for fall storytimes and book discussions begins on Monday. September 14 at 9:30am. Storytime registration may be done either online at www.gardencitypl.org or in person. Book discussion registration is only in person in the Children's Department. Please check the library website www.gardencitypl.org for upcoming events and registration dates. Funding for programs is provided by the Friends of the Garden City Public Library. Priority for registration and participation is given to children who are Garden City Public Library cardholders.
