Finally we have a mystery that we can sink our teeth into. We have had the problems of the third rail on the Long Island Railroad running practically into the gardens of some residents; and we have the Lighthouse Project, the Code Amendments and our school district striving to improve. Now we have a full fledged mystery. We have the Underground Tunnel which made its presence known at the Cherry Valley Club when it had a cave-in near the tenth fairway. The best part of it is that it has been filled, but the extra plus is that you could clearly see it from the club house. There seem to be many answers to choose from and each one has its merits. This also has the added advantage of being a great topic for conversation for the members of that club, for the other two golf clubs in town, and for all the residents of the Village. What more could you ask for as summer comes to a hot, hazy and humid end? Thanks to you folks at Cherry Valley for providing something to take our minds off both the weather and all the other problems we have been chewing on for quite a while now. There have been several other items of mystery that have surfaced over the years and still do every once in a while. Another one is the story that there used to be a tunnel that connected St. Mary's and St. Paul's and the second was the strange appearance of lines of grass through the snow at Adelphi University. No tunnel was ever discovered connecting the schools and the lines on grass through the snow were caused by the underground heating pipes coming from Woodruff Hall (where the heating plant was) to the other building to provide heat to all. This ends your history lesson for the week.

News from the Garden City Pool is that they have received a new supply of books for the dwindling stacks as the season winds down. The good fairy people were Barbara and Jack Nothel who came last week with another supply and the grateful readers (not everyone swims at the pool - many read and socialize) were around them like bees to honey. Carol Countryman, Martha Widner, and many others enjoy the cool waters (more so now dunking themselves in the water since summer finally came) and then there are the 11 a.m. water exercises led by Cindy , who does a great job of circling the ladies and leading the class. There is also an afternoon class provided by the Recreation Department that you can do to music. What a great way to keep fit.

Taking advantage of staying out of the rain and the heat this past week were those playing at the Ladies/Lunch/Bridge at the Garden City Country Club. There were twenty-two tables in play following the buffet lunch and the first Small Slam of the day was dealt, bid and made by Dede Hirsch and Helen Kalyanis in 6 No Trump. The happy winner of the door prize was Arlyn Rath. There was no Grand Slam made that day but the ladies were delighted by an old favorite on the buffet line - chicken a-la king and herb crusted salmon. Bridge Chairlady Muriel Urban announced that the next bridge would take place on Thursday, September 17 th. Be sure to make your reservations,

A very happy wedding anniversary to Frances and John Bermann who will be celebrating their 65 th anniversary on September 2 nd. May they have a wonderful day and a year filled with health and happiness.

A happy birthday wish goes to Jane Nelson, who will be doing her celebrating just around Labor Day. We know she will have a great day and again wishes go to her for a year filled with good health and much happiness with many more years to come.

Again a few words from out of the mouths of babes. "When you want something expensive, ask you grandparents". age 12. Don't ever be too full for dessert" age 10 and finally - "never ask for anything that costs more than $5 when your parents are doing their taxes." age 9. These statements were sent to me by a friend and you must admit they have a lot of sense behind them.

Have a good week and maybe I'll see you at the pool.
