Julie Marie Salem passed away on July 29, 2009. She was the daughter of Neff and Julie DeVita, born in New Haven, Connecticut on January 14, 1926. The family later moved to Brooklyn.

Julie had an extraordinary gift of music. At the young age of 15, she was accepted to the Julliard School as a gifted pianist. In addition to Julliard, she attended St. John's School of Pharmacy.

Julie and Jim, her husband of over 62 years, raised three girls and settled in Garden City where they have lived for almost 54 years. She became an active member in the community, volunteering for the AHRC, Mercy League, and Twigs.

Julie and Jim were members for the Garden City Country Club, where they were avid golfers and enjoyed many wonderful years with their friends.

A mass was celebrated in Julie's honor at St. Joseph's Church in Garden City by her longtime friend Monsignor Edward Tarrant and con-celebrant Father Joseph Schlafer. A burial took place at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale.

Julie is survived by her most loving and devoted husband Jim, her there daughters and son-in-laws, all residing in Garden City, Claudia and Bob Capello, Diane and Tom McClelland, and Jamie and Bill O'Grady. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was preceeded in death by her grandchildren Jonathan Neff Cappello and baby Amy O'Grady, her sisters Elaine and Claire, and her brother Richard. She will be greatly missed by her loving husband Jim and all her family.

Lewis James Hammond, Jr.

Lewis James Hammond, Jr. died March 19, 2009 in Holyoke, Massachusetts at the age of 85. Mr. Hammond resided in Garden City in his early years, and attended Garden City High School. His father Lewis, his step-mother Gladys, sister Phyllis, (Burch) and his brother Allen, were long time residents of Garden City.

During World War II, Mr. Hammond served in the naval air corps. After the war, he attended Amherst College, graduating in 1949. He was a 3-sport athlete at Amherst, and received a trophy for being the best athlete in the senior class. When he graduated, the Amherst Alumni newsletter said, "No Amherst athlete of recent years will be missed so sorely as Lewis J. Hammond, Jr., of Garden City, New York. Anything involving coordination of arm and eye was Hammond's specialty. Amherst will long remember what he could do with a ball."

After college, he worked in New York City for his father's construction equipment business. He was an active member of the Hunts Point Chamber of Commerce (in the Bronx).

He lived with his family in Westport, Connecticut. He coached Little League and youth basketball. He enjoyed gardening, making streams, cutting wood, clamming, etc. He cycled and played tennis into his 80s.

He and his family began going to Nantucket Island in the 1960's, and built their own house there in th 1970s.

He is survived by his wife Nancy, by his four children (Jane of Manhattan, Holly of North Yarmouth, Maine, Jim of Seekonk, Massachusetts, and Bruce of Lyme, New Hampshire), and by his six granddaughters.
