The Spartans Bring Their "A" Game

On Tuesday, July 28th, the Spartans brought their "A" game and defeated the Falcons 15 - 1. The boys were focused and played errorless baseball. Mason Kufs, TJ McEvoy and Aidan Byrnes held the Falcons to 1 run with some great pitching. Aidan Byrnes and Kevin McNiff led the Spartans offense by going 3-3 and 2-2 respectively. Andrew DeSantis, Michael Handal, Quinn Heslin, Mason Kufs, and Erik Wortmann provided additional support with their bats. Anthony Riggi took two (hit by pitches) for the team. Finally, Michael Handal and Kevin McNiff turned a double play to close out the game.
But the week was not over. Thursday was another big battle for the Spartans and they did not disappoint. The Spartans versed Forest Hills, the first place team, and played them tight for the first three innings, but found themselves down by a score of 4-3. The game outcome was a Spartan loss, but for three innings the Spartans gave us playoff level baseball. The defense was anchored by the pitching of Mason Kufs and Michael Handal with Erik Wortmann catching and holding runners with his strong arm. Aidan Byrnes, Michael Handal and Kevin McNiff had great defensive plays in the infield. TJ McEvoy reeled in a bomb to center and Quinn Heslin in right and Mike Liberopoulos in left kept us in the game. The offense was led by Kevin McNiff going 2 for 2 for a second game in a row, Anthony Riggi's monster base clearing triple to right field and Eric Wortmann driving in runners whenever they were in scoring position.
