Charles Franklin Rider Charles Franklin Rider passed away on April 24, 2009. He was born on December 21, 1917, son of Charles Wright Rider and Clara Anderson Rider at Malverne, New York.

Rider attended public schools in Malverne New York and later the University of North Carolina, graduating with the degree of Bachelor of Arts, majoring in economics. He was a singles and doubles player on the undefeated university team He was also selected for the Eastern Division of the Junior Davis Cup team and played briefly on the major tennis circuit, including the National Championship. During his last two years before graduation he had wins over the men's 15th and 16th ranking U.S. players.

Joining the marines after graduation from college, Rider served for five years (1940-45). He participated in the assault landings in the capture of Guadalcanal Island and later the capture of Peleliu Island. Guadalcanal was one of the major turning points in the war in the Pacific. Important Japanese airfields were captured on both islands.

At war's end Rider was relieved of active duty with the rank of major. He was later promoted to Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.

Returning to civilian life, Rider earned an M.B.A. degree at New York University Graduate School of Business Administration majoring in marketing and advertising. For most of his working years he was employed by U.S. News and World Report in a sales capacity at the National Advertising Headquarters in Rockefeller New York, NY.

Mr. Rider was also the owner of commercial residential properties in Malverne New York. His family was among the earliest settlers in the town and a major east-west avenue bears his family name.

Before retirement Rider and his family lived in Malverne and later in Garden City, New York where they were members of the Cherry Valley Country Club and also the Lawrence Beach Club.

Rider served on the Board of Governors of the West Side Tennis Club for many years and as president of the club in 1970-71. In that capacity he had contact with many of the top players and officials in the tennis world as the club was the site of the U.S. National Championships.

After retirement, the Riders became Florida residents, purchased a winter home at the Naples Bath and Tennis Club and a summer home at the Kenmure Country Club, Flat Rock, NC. They also became members of the Hendersonville Country Club.

Mr. Rider was preceded in death by his daughter Susan Ann Rider. He is survived by his beloved wife Millicent D. Rider, his son Thomas C. Rider, his daughter-in-law, Ann S. Rider and his grandchildren Christopher rider and Molly Rider.
