EPA Regional Administrator George Pavlou presents Rob Alvey with Bronze Award for Commendable Service. Rob Alvey, a geologist with the USEPA, was awarded a Bronze Medal for Commendable Service for his successful performance of a complex and challenging cleanup at the Li Tungsten Superfund site which is supporting the City of Glen Cove's redevelopment of a blighted waterfront area. Alvey, a long time Garden City resident, is with the EPA's Technical Support Team within the Emergency and Remedial Response Division. The former tungsten ore processing facility had gone bankrupt in the 1980's leaving behind large quantities of hazardous materials, unsafe buildings, above and below ground storage tanks, and contaminated soils and sediments. The site was investigated, the building demolished, and tanks removed. Roughly 35,000 tons of metals contaminated soils and 85,000 tons of radioactive soils were removed from the site and transported to disposal facilities. The Remedial Action was completed in the Spring of 2008. The Li Tungsten Superfund Site properties are the centerpiece for the community's plans to revitalize 214 acres of the city's waterfront. The waterfront development is expected to create as many as 1,700 new full-time jobs and bring in new business that will generate an estimated $200 million in annual sales.
