At the landmark '21' Club restaurant in New York City on July 9, 2009, the "Iron Gate" Chapter No. 275, of the Air Force Association (AFA), presented Garden City resident, Mrs. Ellen Mulvihill, with their prestigious Teacher of the Year Award for her continuous exemplary service as an elementary school educator spanning over three decades. For nearly eleven years, over 400 students have passed through Mrs. Mulvihill's fourth grade classroom at the St. Thomas the Apostle School in West Hempstead, NY. For the past three years she has been pivotal in the teaching of Mathematics and Science by incorporating a wide variety of learning modalities including visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactual, in optimizing her students' learning abilities. Mrs. Mulvihill's significant impact on her students has been underscored by their noteworthy high achievement on the annual New York State Testing Program in Mathematics and Science. In the words of her principal, Mrs. Christina Teisch, "She puts the needs of her students above all else and strives to give each child a positive school experience."
