Students in Miss McCavera's second-grade class always looked forward to their sustained silent reading time on Friday afternoons. They had a special name for it, Pillow Friday. Students knew that along with their favorite books, they were allowed to bring a pillow from home to help them have a comfortable silent reading time. The students and their teacher read up to 18 minutes in perfect silence, reading wonderful stories to themselves.

Halfway through the school year, students and teacher wanted to share this wonderful time with their parents. So they began on alternating Fridays what they call Parent Pillow Friday. Parents were encouraged to bring their own reading materials and of course, a pillow.

Miss McCavera and her class were so pleased with the large turnout of mothers, fathers, and on some weeks, grandparents, who came to read silently together. The children were interested to see the wide range of reading materials that the adults brought to school. Some parents brought book club selection books, magazines and newspapers to read. The parents said they enjoyed the quiet comfortable atmosphere with the students. Due to the wonderful response this year to Parent Pillow Friday, Miss McCavera looks forward to implementing the program again in the new school year.
