St. Joseph's 2009 Spartans Baseball Team On June 22, 2009, St. Joes Spartans found itself playing in the CYO championship game at Merrick Park against first place and undefeated St. Patrick. The Spartans, went 8-2 on the season, were one hit away from winning the championship game but came up short with a score of 3-2.

Championship game and season highlights

Mason Kufs shutout St Patrick for 3 innings .Michael Handal's running catch in center field, Dennis Lind's defensive plays at second base. Erik Wortmann for catching the whole game and tagging out yet another running trying to score. Charlie Comiskey's defense in left and at third base. TJ McEvoy's tag on a runner trying to take third, Quinn Heslin with a great at bat in the top of the 6th helping to move the tying run to third. Andrew DeSantis' all out hustle to beat out an infield hit and get us our second run. Kevin McNiff and Anthony Riggi for their hot hitting all season. Nolan Pappas and his strong pitching efforts throughout the season. Aidan Burns with another strong game at first base. Mathew Granville who missed this game because of fever but went 2 for 2 (both doubles) in the semi-final game to make sure we could play in the finals.

An unbelievable game to watch down to the last out. The parents of the CYO Spartans would like to thank Paul Handal, Dennis Lind, Erik Wortmann, and Kevin McNiff for an excellent season. Most of all to the St Joe's players, you have made us all proud and played with all heart.
