Middle School Students Raise Cancer Awareness

2009-07-03 / School

Garden City Middle School recently sponsored its third annual LiveSTRONG Day. LiveSTRONG is an organization founded by cancer survivor and seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong to raise awareness about the global cancer burden, to change laws to provide more funding for cancer research, and to provide a safer environment to prevent cancers. It is also serves as a resource for survivor care, cancer information, and disease prevention.

Coordinated by home and career skills teacher Mrs. Constance Beovich, students sold LiveSTRONG bracelets and collected spare change in the cafeteria for an entire week. The students also disseminated information about the organization to students and staff, and gave out Cancer Survivor manuals to staff.

The week culminated with a dress-down day on which students and staff wore yellow to raise awareness about cancer. Anyone who didn't own any yellow clothing received a yellow ribbon made by the home and career skills students. When the donations were tallied after the event, the middle school had raised over $400 for LiveSTRONG.
