St. Joseph School To Celebrate 70 Years of Excellence
      In September 1939 the first "first day" of school began for students at Saint Joseph School, Garden City. Sister Mary Justine O'Loughlin welcomed 169 students in grades K through 6 and a tradition of excellence in Catholic education was born.

Stewart School Students Learn About Colombia
      Mrs. Katherine Martinus, parent of Tyler Martinus, recently visited Mrs. Guiry's and Señora Gutierrez's second grade class at Stewart School to speak to the students about a typical day in Colombia for a second grader. She described customary meals, methods of transportation to school, arrival and dismissal times, typical classes, and the climate.

Winner In Environmental Poster Contest
      Middle school seventh grader, Nicholas Vernice, was selected as one of the top five State winners for his entry in the New York Water Environment Association/New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Poster Contest (NYWEA/NYSDEC) held during the organizations' 2009 conference in NYC.

Middle And High Schools Welcome Marines
      The 2nd Battalion/ 25th Marines visited Garden City's Middle and High Schools last month to share their experiences during two recent tours of duty in Iraq, as well as to thank the students for sending the many letters and sundries while in service at Al Asad Air Base.

      The Garden City High School 2009 valedictorian, Sarah D'Antonio embodies superb academic achievement and genuine kindness.       Nicholas Vernice, a Garden City Middle School seventh grader, was honored by the New York State PTA for his interpretation of this year's theme, "WOW".

Students Win Gold At Latin Competition
      Eleven Latin students from Garden City High School won awards in the 2009 Latin Certamen competition. The Certamen is an annual academic competition for Latin students from across Long Island. This year's competition was held at Stony Brook University in late spring. Teams comprising all levels of study answered questions, with a final round determining the winner.

Homestead Students Celebrate National Run Day
      On June 3rd, students and staff at the Homestead School celebrated the value of running as part of a healthy and active lifestyle. This first-time initiative was centered on the idea that running is for everyone! Prior to National Run Day, students learned how to warm-up and stretch properly before hitting the "track.

Young Author's Contest Winners
      Garden City Middle School students Victoria Bee and Conor Donachie, pictured here with English teacher, Ms. Niki Paloubis, were selected as winners in this year's Young Author's Contest sponsored by the Nassau Reading Council. The students were honored during a June 1st ceremony at Molloy College, Wilbur Arts Center, where they were invited to read their work.

Butterfly Release At Locust School
      Students in Mrs. Kara Salierno's class at the Locust School concluded their study of the life cycle of a butterfly with the release of the butterflies the students had raised in their classroom. "Bye, butterflies," one student called as the American Painted Lady butterflies flew away from the party held in their honor in Locust's courtyard.
