Once again, Victoria Chimento, a student in Ms. Marie Nuzzi's Spanish 4H class at Garden City High School, walked away a top winner in the Victor Baptiste Spanish Essay Contest, a competition sponsored annually by the AATSP, the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Payton Seltenreich, a fifth grade student of Ms. Kelly Benito at the Stewart School, was recently awarded first prize in the 2009 "It Ought to Be a Law" competition, sponsored by Senator Kemp Hannon. More ... Architect John Winberry (center) visited the third grade Quest students at Stewart School late last month. The students have been studying famous architects and landscape architects. After an informational presentation, Mr. Winberry answered the students' questions. In the remaining weeks of school, the children will utilize their understanding of architectural design to build a model city. More ... On May 15 the four year old students at Cathedral Nursery School had a very special visitor: a Garden city fire truck! First Assistant Chief Charles Cavarro and Fireman James O'Keefe, who both have children attending Cathedral, brought the truck and several firemen to talk with the childrem about fire safety. On June 4, 2009, Alexa Gutierrez, a senior at Garden City High School, was presented with the Bronze Award from the Hispanic Heritage Youth Organization in the category of Mathematics and Engineering. Congratulations to Laura Wysocki, a senior at Garden City High School, who received a $500.00 scholarship from Dr. Denise Emma. The Dr. Denise Emma Healthcare Scholarship is given annually to a graduating senior who intends to pursue a career in the health field. Laura expressed her desire to pursue a career in dentistry. More ... South Kent School (SKS) graduated 65 students Sunday, May 31 at its traditional Prize Day ceremony. The graduates represented 12 states and nine foreign countries. First graders in Mrs. Millie Joyce's Locust School class recently wrote and illustrated hard covered books, which they dedicated to their mothers, in honor of Mother's Day. Incorporating the Garden City Public School's Write Traits program, students spent several months learning about ideas, word choice, quality details, organization, and conventions. More ... Julia Cupolo, an eighth grader at Garden City Middle School, has been selected as a student ambassador for "The Land of the Rising Sun" program offered through the People to People organization. Julia will be traveling to Tokyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima for two weeks in July to develop a deeper understanding of the Japanese culture and to represent American youth while in Japan. More ... Hempstead Town Receiver of Taxes Don Clavin recently read one of his favorite books to second grade students at Stratford Avenue School in Garden City on the occasion of its 2009 Read-A-Loud Month Program. More ... This May, second and third grade students at the Stewart School participated in the "Kids on the Block" disability awareness program presented by the Epilepsy Foundation of Garden City. Through the use of puppetry, students were instructed on the topics of epilepsy, head injuries, and learning disabilities. The program emphasized tolerance and acceptance of all children. More ... Miss McCavera's second graders recently presented their final class play of the school year - the teddy bear hero. Tagalong teddy is the main character of this play. The weather couldn't have been better for the St. Joseph School Annual Field Day at Stewart Field. All grades came together for a day of friendly competition under the direction of Physical Education Director Mr. "S" and then relaxed in the shade for a McDonald's lunch and ice cream treat.
