A Word From The Publisher

Despite the cool rainy weather, summer will officially arrive on Sunday. School will officially end this week, and Garden City High School will hold its graduation festivities starting with "Prom-a-Palooza" on Thursday, June 25.

Prom-a-Palooza is an event at which prom attendees and their families can kick off the evening with photo taking and refreshments at Garden City High School before the prom begins. Attendees are then provided transportation over to the Garden City Hotel for the actual prom. This event, which was created by the Garden City Community Council on Substance Abuse and Violence Prevention, brings together the students and their families in a festive way before the prom while at the same time helps prevent some of the unfortunate issues that took place in past years when students arrived at the prom inebriated.

This sort of creative thinking is very helpful in solving problems like this. Instead of lecturing students about bad behavior, giving them something better to do while at the same time involving other family members is a great idea. Positive reinforcement always works better than negative, and the more the community is involved the better!
