Rain, Rain, go away - Come again some other day. The only trouble is that the other day always comes up rain again. June roses seem to be rotting on the bush, mold is growing on driveways, the Belmont Festival was a wash out and the favorite horse did not win the Belmont Stakes. What more can happen? The good news - and we do try for good news - is that the pool is opening tomorrow and as I write this it is supposed to be a nice day.

The Garden City Historical Society's Flea Market did have a good day in both the weather and the number of people attending. That was good for the Society and for you the buying public. I'm sure you got just what you were looking for as the variety was great. I'm looking forward to next year.

The Friends of the Adelphi University Library met in the Donald Kelly room at the Library and made plans for the upcoming season. They will have their annual Fall Lecture on Sunday, November 1st and the speaker will be from the Brooklyn Museum. The topic will be: Art for Eternity - Ancient Egypt. Garden City residents are invited as are all art lovers. Be sure to mark your calendars now so you don't miss it. Attending the last meeting were: Kathy Louros, Cynthia Brown, Gloria Jones, Gladys Clemmensen and Muriel Urban, all Directors from Garden City.

Garden City has lost yet another Volunteer Organization, the Garden City League for the Helen Keller Services For The Blind. Established in 1961, they were devoted money raisers for the HKSB and over the years raised $579,539 for Camp Helen Keller. The late Dorothy Candiotti was a leading light in that organization and it is with great sadness that I have to report its demise.

Happy birthday wishes go to Joe Hayes who will be celebrating his special day on the 28th of June. Joe and his wife Kay have been living in Garden City a long time and are well known in town. May you have a wonderful time on your special day and good health and much happiness for many more years to come.

Arlyn and George Rath will be celebrating their 56th wedding anniversary on the 26th of this month and they too have been long time and well known residents of this town. May you have a wonderful day and a year filled with health and happiness with many more years of wedded bliss to come.

Unfortunately there is always sad news and this time it marks the passing of Eleanor Woodworth Joseph who left us last week at the age of 98. She leaves her three remaining sons and her husband Franklin and her many friends in town with fond memories of her life. Eleanor was a long time member of the Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead, joining in 1949. She was active in the club and served on the Board of Directors and as Music Department Chairlady. Eleanor was a talented musician and studied at the Cathedral of the Incarnation. She was a member of the Organists Guild and played in many churches and also gave many concerts. She was loved and admired by all who knew her and our prayers and sympathy go out to her husband and to her family in their time of sorrow.

Mark Twain came to Garden City last Saturday and there was a goodly crowd to greet him. He spoke well and as usual, got a lot of laughs to boot. Among those in the audience were: Alice and Cedric Meldonian, Paula Rega, Marye Heston, and Barbara Haynes. Mark, in his white suit, entertained his audience before and after the delicious refreshments provided by Suzie Alvey. The audience went away happy and that is the way it should be with a show. The proceeds went to benefit our Garden City Bird Sanctuary, which of course, was the reason for Mr. Twain's coming to town.

Now, I have a question for you. With all the rain we have been having, do you think they are digging for oil, gold, or water in front of Village Hall? Let me know if you find out.

I also have a tip for those who have inground sprinklers. Turn it off. We don't need more water and you are wasting both water and money. The roots of the grass are treading water and grass can't swim.

See you at the pool if it ever stops raining and Happy Father's Day to ALL DADS!
