Katherine Castronovo
Katherine Castronovo The Garden City Student Aid and Scholarship Fund is pleased to announce that Katherine H. Castronovo has been selected as the 2009 recipient of the Fund's Julia Maloney Scholarship. Katherine is the twelfth Garden City High School senior to receive this prestigious award. The scholarship was made possible by a generous bequest of the late Julia Maloney, an elementary school teacher in Garden City for 47 years. The announcement of the award, in the amount of $3000.00 per year for four years, was made at the annual Senior Awards Ceremony at the High School on June 1st. Selection for the Julia Maloney Scholarship is based on academic excellence, character, service to school and community, a personal interview and an essay describing a teacher who has had a strong positive influence on the students.

In addition to an excellent academic record, inclusion on the Principal's List for all quarters and membership in the National Honor Society, Kate has been active in music, sports and clubs at Garden City High School. She is a co-founder of the Andy Club at the High School. This club, an offshoot of the Andy Foundation, raised money for less fortunate children on Long Island. Kate's involvement extends even to managing the Foundation's website. As a dedicated youth member of the Garden City Community Church, she has worked on fundraisers, taught Sunday school and served as a team member on three church-sponsored mission work trips for hurricane relief in Mississippi and Alabama. Her work experience shows a creative flair. At Once Upon A Dish, a paint your own pottery studio, she paints custom pieces, teaches classes and runs children's parties.

But her greatest love is the marching band. She has been a part of the Garden City High School Marching Band since Middle School and flute section leader for the past two years. She credits her experiences there with boosting self confidence, developing leadership skills and promoting a desire to pursue excellence in all her activities.

Kate will be attending the University of Southern California. We wish her every success in the years ahead.
