De-Mystifying College Plans
Are you considering how to save for the escalating costs of your children's higher education but cannot unravel the questions surrounding college savings plans? The Young Adult Department has invited an expert to come and try to answer your questions. Chris Stack, Esq. Managing Consultant, Savingforcollege.com is an authority on educational finance and 529 plans in particular. He has served as a principal or participating author for a number of states' legislation establishing 529 programs as well as assisted several states in the implementation of these programs. Learn how these plans may help you in providing for the funding of your children or grandchildren's higher educations. The program will be held on Thursday, June 18th at 7 PM in the large meeting room of the Garden City Public Library.
2009 Young Adult Summer Reading Club
All 'tweens and teens from those entering Middle School for the first time in September 2009 to those entering 12th grade are invited to be a part of the Young Adult Summer Reading Club. Creativity is the key word for this summer. Since the theme is Express Yourself @ Your Library, many of the programs planned for the young adults were chosen for the license that is given to the YA to be individually creative. To be a member of the club, just register at the YA desk or online from the GC Library website: www.gardencitypl.org. All registrants receive a bonus prize bag. Membership has no meeting requirements. Registration began on Monday June 8th.
Read or listen to anything and let us know about it to be invited to the end of the summer Back-to-School-Bash. Win prizes all summer long by submitting mini-reviews into the raffle box. In addition, if you submit a review online a raffle is put in the box for you. What is more fun than winning a jar full of goodies when you have guessed the number in the jar? A different goodie is up for winning each week. Since the Young Adult Department is accessible online or by snail mail you can be part of the club and come to the bash even if you are at camp or away all summer.
Wii Night for YAs
The Young Adult Department was able to secure a Wii system to use for "Wii Night for YAs". This will be held on Monday evening June 29th at 7 PM. We invite any attendee to bring a favorite game to play on the Wii system and share. Not to worry we will have other games available for everyone's use. Refreshments will be served. Please sign up starting June 15th so we might be prepared for everyone.
Training Sessions
for Teens & Tots
at the Pool
The Young Adult Department in cooperation with the Garden City Department of Recreation will again be offering Teens & Tots Storytime in the picnic area of the pool on Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning June 30 and ending August 5th. If you are in 5th grade this is the first time you will be eligible to be a reader! To be a part of this program, you need to be trained. The Library offered formal training sessions in March and April, one for reading and book selection and a second for crafts and activities. If your schedule did not allow for attending those formal sessions, you may still participate by calling for and coming to private training sessions. Please contact Mrs. Kelly or Mrs. Alford at 742-8405 to arrange for a convenient date and time. Once trained, forever trained but those YAs in older grades who did not take advantage of training in previous years are invited to come for private trainings and take part in this valued community service.
Lunch at the Library
New this year, Young Adults are invited to bring their lunches to the library on Thursdays at 12:30 PM. The Friends of the Library will be providing beverages and desserts and the Young Adult department will have board games, crafts and talk. Beat the heat and hang with friends for lunch.
Keep watching for all the summer activities. There is something every day at the Library. Registration for all YA programs may be done in person at the Young Adult desk, by phone to the Young Adult Librarian (516-742-8405) or by email to mkelly@gardencitypl.org.
