Garden City Budget News
      The largest cost in the Village budget is labor. Beyond salaries, the cost of employee benefits is an integral part of Village's labor costs. The total costs of employee benefits have risen from $2.9 million in 1998 to $8.3 million in 2008, growing at an annual compounded growth rate of 11%.

Troop 1459 Final Project
      Troop 1459, a fifth grade Junior Troop, has just completed 6 years of scouting together and for their final project, which will earn them their Girl Scout Bronze Award, they built, painted and decorated 2 bookcases to be donated to the newly refurbished tennis bubble at Community Park. Along with the bookcases, the girls collected enough books to fill them for others to enjoy.

      Cub Scout Pack 55 went to Camp Schiff this weekend to put up 3 large, tents especially designed for long time camping by Scouts. Passport Fair Comes To Library
      The Garden City Public Library has made arrangements with the U.S. Postal Service to send representatives to help people fill out required forms and process passport applications. You must bring the necessary pieces of information: proof of citizenship, a current photo I.D., and two passport photos. (You can have passport photos taken on the spot for $15.00).

      Dr. Megan Lawson Sharpe, daughter of David and Joan Lawson of Garden City received her medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine on May 17, 2009. Megan has accepted an internship in Internal Medicine at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, a teaching hospital of University of Pennsylvania and the oldest hospital in the United States, founded by Benjamin Franklin and Dr.

Welcoming Club Art Auction
      The Garden City Welcoming Club hosted an Art Auction at the Bar Association, hosted by Christine Phillippides of the Philanthropic Committee. A preview of the art was accompanied by libations and hors d'oeuvres. The selection of art, pictures and memorabilia, was extensive. The auction was a success and many happy bidders went home with beautiful artwork.

      The opening of the Garden City Casino's tennis courts for the season is traditionally celebrated with separate women's and men's tennis dinners. The men's tennis dinner was held in early May this year with a large contingency of tennis members in attendance.

      Garden City AHRC will hold its annual membership tea on Tuesday, June 23, 11a.m. until 2 p.m., at the lovely Garden City home of Mary Ellen Buckley.       Christ Episcopal Church in Garden City will celebrate the last day of Sunday School on June 14th at 10 a.m. with their annual Awards Sunday Mass (i.e., the Holy Eucharist). American Legion Visits Northport VA Hospital
      On June 2nd a group of Legion and Auxiliary members attended a Memorial Service for a veteran whom the Auxiliary had adopted and had been visiting for 17 years. They celebrated his birthday, visited him during the Christmas Holidays, Easter, Valentines Day, etc. They were his family. He was confined to Northport VA Hospital for 57 years.

      Garden City High School senior girls recently attended the annual Youth Breast Health Program in the Garden City High School library. This presentation was coordinated by the Garden City High School nurses, Mrs. Eileen Wyremski, R.N. and Mrs. Karen Boelsen, R.N. The educational program focused on breast health and the importance of breast self -examination.
