Renegades Win At LAX Fest
Jack Tobin sizes up his opponent
It was the GC Renegades first time participating in the SWR Lax Fest so we were not sure what to expect. We were also going up against 3 teams we have never seen before so we really did not know what was going to happen. All I can say is GOALTENDING, GOALTENDING, GOALTENDING was great all day. Connor Brown and Greg Gardner both played awesome all 3 games. Connor and Greg have been working well together all year long but never have both played as well as they did on the same day. As it turns out Connor Brown was actually involved in the highlight goal of the day.
In the first game against a tough Mt Sinai team the GC Renegades got off to a slow start. It was a battle all the way throughout the game and ended with a tie score. In tournament play overtime is decided by what is known as "Brave Heart". It is when only one offensive player from each team takes the field for a face off to start the overtime and their goalies are in the nets. First player to score wins the game. During the overtime the Mt Sinai player came down took a shot and Connor Brown made a great save. Not only did he make a game saving save but Connor Brown picked up the loose ball and sprinted down field for a one on one of his own against the Mt Sinai goalie and scored the winning goal. RENEGADES WIN 1
Scott Irwin gets back on defense
The second game was against a combination team from Pat / Medford. We normally have problems when we come off a long break between games but not this day. The Renegades came out firing on all cylinders. The defense of Jack Tobin, Matthew Borges, Justin Holloway, Thomas Mascola and Brian Goulard did not let the offense of Pat/Medford get anything going. They controlled the box area and cleared the ball up the field to the offense. Something they did well all day in all three games. Everyone on offense contributed and really showed they can play the style of game we like to play which is known as run and gun. The final score was 9-3. RENEGADES WIN 2
Just when you thought it could not get anymore exciting the third game began against a very tough Team LI. Team LI is made up of 6th and 7th graders so we knew we were in for a battle. The older bigger kids were a little intimidating but we knew if we could move the ball we could stay ahead of them. This game was a battle of ball possession and you can not win that battle without winning the face offs. Chris Repetti, James Sullivan and Scott Irwin won all but one face off. It was a great game and once again everyone contributed. There was outstanding goaltending by Connor Brown and Greg Gardner. All day we had outstanding midfield play by Brain Geophort, Taylor Ricci, Luke Armstrong, Colin DeAngelo, Scott and Brian Irwin, James Sullivan, Chris Repetti, and Quinn McDonagh. The attack of Liam Byrnes, Matthew Esposito, Joseph Parrinelli and Chris Moscatello controlled the ball behind the cage. The defense continued to play well. It came right down to the final seconds and the horn sounded which ended the game. Renegades win the final game of the tournament 6-5. RENEGADES WIN 3.
