Law Contest Grand Prize Winner
Mary Kate Kenny at the "There Ought To Be A Law" contest
Each year, the sixth grade students at St. Joseph School participate in the "There Ought To Be A Law" essay contest sponsored by Senator Kemp Hannon. The class first learns how a bill becomes a law and then each student thinks of an idea that New York State could present as a bill to be enacted into law. St. Joseph School sixth grader, Mary Kate Kenny attended an awards ceremony on Thursday and accepted the Grand Prize. Her idea for a law called for Kindergarten Screenings to include questions to alert parents and teachers to the eating habits of the incoming student. This would hopefully lower the rate of childhood obesity. This popular contest attracted 1,900 entries. Mary Kate was chosen Grand Prize winner from 30 finalists from 29 schools. All finalists received a citation for their work and the winner received a $100 savings bond. Congratulations to Miss Kenny!!
