      The Board of Trustees recently approved a $44.3 million tax levy to pay for Village operations. Residents who are concerned about the magnitude of taxes they pay should ask themselves - * Can the services they require be delivered in a more cost effective manner?

EPOA Invites All Residents To Hear Hempstead Supervisor
      The Eastern Property Owners' Association is inviting residents from all sections of Garden City to hear Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray address the concerns of property owners at its joint annual meeting on Monday, June 1, in the large meeting room of the Garden City Library. Supervisor Murray will begin speaking at 8 pm, allowing time for questions afterward.

Firefighters Help Neighbors Tackle Blazes
      In the last month, Garden City's volunteer firefighters were busy assisting neighboring fire departments in tackling two serious fires. In the evening hours of Sunday, April 19th, Garden City volunteer firefighters were called to assist the Franklin Square Fire Department with a fire at the well-known A & S Bagel Store on Hempstead Turnpike.

      Two local bands will be performing at the Garden City Belmont Festival on Friday, June 5. Six Gun - formed more than 20 years ago - has performed at the Belmont Festival every year since its inception. Fivestone, a five person contemporary and classic rock band, will make its inaugural performance at the festival.

Ceremonial Groundbreaking At Bird Sanctuary, Parente Memorial
      With $55,000 in funding provided through the 2006 Nassau County Environmental Bond, the Garden City Bird Sanctuary will have a wet meadows installed in a portion of the main stormwater storage basin at the 9-acre site. On Saturday, May 16, special guests attended the Twilight Cocktail Party and participated in the ceremonial groundbreaking for the project.

Young Adult Pages Maria Ortiz and Alexandra Woehr (pictured left to right) conducted the program teaching the teens the techniques of working with colorful string to make the very popular string bracelet.

      The Garden City Public Library is a collection site for used eyeglasses for the Recycle for Sight Program, which is run by a local Lions Club. The Lions Club has expressed its appreciation to the Library for continuing to serve as an ongoing collection site for the Recycle for Sight Program. A box is provided for the used eyeglass collection near the interior doors of the Library.

Food Drive At Library
      A blue donation barrel for Long Island Cares, the Harry Chapin Food Bank, will be located across from the Library's circulation desk until the end of August. Donations of canned and dry boxed foods will be used to help stock Long Island food pantries, senior and children's day care centers, soup kitchens and shelters. Forty thousand Long Island children go to bed hungry each day.

      The Colonel Aaron Ogden Chapter of the NSDAR ended its calendar year with a meeting at the Garden City Historical Society House on May 12. A business meeting chaired by Regent Janet Littlejohn was followed by a fingertip luncheon. At the luncheon's conclusion, members traveled a short distance to the Cathedral of the Incarnation.

Pool Applications Mailed
     The application packets for the Garden City Pool have been mailed, if you have not received one please come to either the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Avenue or the Pool Office to pick one up. We ask that residents bring with them a current utility bill as well as a picture identification to receive a replacement application packet.
