With our soldiers still going off to war on foreign soil, it is even more important to honor those who fought in other wars. We have veterans right here in town who served in World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam, as well as some who served in the Gulf War and Iraq and Afghanistan. Make sure that you buy your poppy from one of the members of the American Legion Post or from one of the ladies of their auxiliary. Come out to salute these veterans as they march in the Memorial Day Parade and go that extra mile with them and attend the exercises at the memorial in front of the Middle School. They have given so much for us, this is the least we can do for them. See you there!
The Garden City Pool applications are out and when we send them in they go with many prayers for a bit less rain and much more sun for the season. It goes so quickly and it is such a wonderful place to meet friends, take swim lessons, and get you exercise in. I will look forward to seeing you there. It won't be long untill it opens.
The Casino Luncheon/Bridge - the final one for the season - was held last week and there was much applause for the prize winners. Of course, not everyone could win a prize but a few of them were Claire Burns, Miriam Benack, Rosemary Brown, Barbara Nothel and a good number of others. Sue Giangrasso has done such a wonderful job of running this event that everyone gave her a round of applause, which she richly deserved. Everyone is looking forward to next year.
Bridge was certainly the topic of conversation as the Garden City Country Club's monthly Lunch/Bridge was held on May 14 th as was the Geranium Bridge sponsored by the Cathedral Women. It was a feast for bridge lovers as they tried to make up their minds which one to attend.
At the Garden City Country Club, the first Small Slam of the day was dealt, bid, and made by Lucille Tilitz and Ann D'Addario in 6 hearts. The happy winner of the Door Prize was Mary Loos. No Grand Slam was made that day, but enjoying the afternoon were Gloria Tassone, Jennie Pappas, Peggy Mumm. Irma Giamboi, Judy Radocy, Eda Meglio, and many others. Bridge Chairlady Muriel Urban announced that the next Lunch/Bridge would be held on Thursday, June 18 th and to be sure to make your reservations.
Enjoying the afternoon at Cathedral House were Blanche Muller, Irene Christie, Janet Littlejohn, and Edythe Cox among many others. The prizes were great and so were the geraniums.
Several of our town gentlemen are recuperating at Winthrop University Hospital and all our best wishes go to them for a speedy recovery. Rev. Nicholas Magoulias, retired Pastor of St. Paul's Cathedral in Hempstead is one, Charles Dunleavy is another. He returned from a weeks vacation celebrating his and Elizabeth's wedding anniversary when he came down with a bad cold and wound up at Winthrop. Neil Gubner is also recuperating there and we hope they are all back with us again in short order. Mayor Hal Hecken a recent patient there, has been seen around town walking his dog and that is also good news.
Happy birthday wishes go to Bill Fendt, Chuck Vasoll, Jack Morrison, and Filippo Balboni, all of whom celebrate their special days just about now. May you have a great day and a year filled with good health and much happiness with many more to come.
As for the ladies, we wish many happy returns of the day to Joan Butler, who blew out the candles on her cake on May 17 th and the Michele Dyrland who celebrates her special day on the 27 th, to Kay Thompson, who does ditto on the 28 th and to Mayilyn Camp, who claims the 29 th as her birthday. You four ladies should celebrate together and we hope that you each have a wonderful day and a year filled with health and happiness.
A Beg Your Pardon to Jerry Regan, who celebrates his birthday on May 24 th and may you have all the best on your special day. If you all like chocolate, you should get ready to go to Planting Fields early in June to learn all you ever wanted to know about that tasty treat and were afraid to ask.
Your thought for the week is: Those viewing the world through rose colored glasses may end up seeing red. See you next week.
