Hempstead Supervisor To Speak At EPOA

2009-05-22 / Community

Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray will be the featured speaker at the Eastern Property Owners' Association's annual meeting, to be held on Monday, June 1, starting at 7:30 pm in the large meeting room of the Garden City Library. The meeting is open to the public, and Garden City residents from all sections of the Village are encouraged to attend.

Supervisor Murray, the first woman to be elected to that position, has come under fire recently from supporters of the $3.7 billion Lighthouse redevelopment project proposed by Islanders owner Charles Wang and RXR Realty chief Scott Rechler for the Nassau HUB. Backed by Nassau County executive Thomas Suozzi, the Lighthouse project is currently under review by the Town of Hempstead where proponents, including Mr. Wang, claim it is being stalled, a charge Supervisor Murray has denied.

Environmental consultants hired by the Town of Hempstead to review the developer's environmental impact statement earlier this month called for revisions to address traffic, noise, garbage and tax revenue concerns that were not adequately explored.

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, whose district includes Garden City and the Lighthouse development site, has asked for $41 million in federal funds to plan a mass transit system for the HUB.

Supervisor Murray will begin speaking at 8 pm, allowing time for questions afterward.

Voting for all 10 members of the Garden City East Nominating Committee that proposes candidates for Village-wide offices, Village Board of Trustees and School Board Trustees will begin promptly at 7:30 pm. Only qualified voters who live in the East may vote in this election.

Also on the agenda are updates on current issues and reports from Trustees Nick Episcopia and Dennis Donnelly, with questions and answers to follow. Election of EPOA officers, directors and nominating committee members is scheduled too.

Every resident of the East has been mailed the EPOA Newsletter, which contains all candidate resumes and election information. This is also available for everyone on the EPOA Web site: www.gcepoa.org.

Please come to the EPOA meeting on Monday, June 1. If you live in the East and are not a member of the EPOA, please consider joining with your neighbors in the EPOA to keep Garden City the wonderful family Village that it is today.
