A Word From The Publisher

The Garden City Board of Education has put on hold plans to introduce a new curriculum in the high school called the International Baccalaureate program due to budget constraints.

A committee had been studying the program and determined that this was not the year to ask the board for the $200,000 it would cost to implement the program. We agree - this is not the time to saddle the taxpayers with a new expense. The question is, will it ever be time?

While we recognize that educational programs have to grow and evolve with the times, the district has an exemplary Advanced Placement program. The district report card, released this week, points out that there has been a marked increase in the number of students taking AP exams, and a large number of students receiving special awards from the AP program.

It seems to us that if the district has an excellent and growing AP program the district should not split its resources by implementing a second program. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
