"How To Wear Your Genes"

2009-05-15 / Community

Instead of worrying about how your look in your "jeans," Winthrop-University Hospital's Spirit of Women series would like to encourage you to take a look at your other "genes" - and their impact on your health and well being.

"How to Wear Your Genes," a free Spirit of Women event open to the community, will be held on Tuesday, May 26th at 6:00 PM, at Winthrop's Community Outreach Center, 120 Mineola Boulevard in Mineola, at the corner of Second Street. The informative evening will include lectures from healthcare professionals in Winthrop's Division of Genetics, as well as door prizes, demonstrations and more.

The lectures will focus on a variety of topics designed to get women thinking about the significance of genetics. Monika Zak, MS, Supervisor and Genetic Counselor at Winthrop, will speak about hereditary cancers; Melanie Charles, MS, Genetic Counselor, will focus on prenatal genetics; Colleen Farley-Cornell, nutritionist at Winthrop, will speak about genetics and obesity; and Moris Angulo, MD, Director of Human Genetics at Winthrop, will discuss genetics of short and tall stature.

With increased awareness of the importance of an individual's unique genetic make-up, women can take actions such as making healthy lifestyle choices and partnering with their physicians to take steps that will minimize the impact of their inherited risk of disease.

Parking and the entrance are in the rear of the building. Seating is limited and reservations are required. A light supper will be served. To reserve a seat, please call 1-866-WINTHROP.
