New Soccer Club Formed

2009-05-08 / Sports

There is a new soccer club in town. Artisan Social F.C., founded by former Garden City resident Donny Schreier, is establishing its first chapter here in Garden City. The club has plans to open numerous chapters in communities throughout the New York area.

Artisan Social is unique in its approach to soccer, including the use of nontraditional equipment such as low-bounce size 1 and size 2 futsal balls and 2x5 foot goals (no goalkeepers). Games for the very young are customarily 2v2 or 3v3 and played on a maximum field size of approximately 16x12 yards. As players develop they progress to futsal (5v5 including goalkeepers), 7v7, and eventually to the traditional 11v11. The focus for the young player is strictly on ball skills and very basic small-sided play, and it offers children a very different experience to playing the game. They are always involved and getting the ball, and it is a lot of fun to play.

With such a gradual introduction to the traditional, full-sided game, Artisan Social has no plans to compete in the Long Island Junior Soccer League or other established leagues where at young ages teams are required to field more players. It will instead organize its own competitions with outside clubs and academies and with its own chapters as they are established.

Boys and girls of all ages are welcome to participate with Artisan Social. Those who play for other soccer clubs, such as the Garden City Centennials, are also welcome to train and even compete with Artisan Social when there is no conflict with their primary club. Training sessions are currently being conducted weekdays at St. Paul's from 4-6pm and will continue through the summer months in the morning.
